TALKS AND WORKSHOPS

LOOKING AT LANDSCAPE - Talk with slides

This talk is a general look at shape and form in landscape. All kinds of work can be and are incorporated into making a landscape work with fabrics. From the minature sizes of the smallest pieces, to template making, applique, and putting the whole together in a convincing image which is then further worked into with the quilting stitches, this talk should inspire anyone interested in landscape.

The talk will include a slide show of landscapes for analysis and constructive conversation. Questions and discussion encouraged. As Effie's work focuses on the landscapes of the Highlands and Islands of Scotland, the photographs used will be taken from that research. Effie will also show some of her landscape work.

WORKSHOPS

All work in landscapes is labour intensive. There are no shortcuts to gain a quick fix. This is definitely not 'stack and whack'. One day can be very good for getting a comprehensive start made, however if there is a chance your group can book two or even three days to work on a landscape piece, the level of achievement is markedly different.

MAKE A LANDSCAPE TRIPTYCH

Use a given pattern(s) or your own design

Make a triptych hanging using three 15 inch landscape blocks sashed and bound. The blocks can be the same pattern and in different colouring, or completely different blocks.

If you use the patterns made for the course you are likely to make more ground with the cutting and piecing. If you choose to make your own design, expect to make less progress in the manufacture. Either way there is a lot to be learned and enjoyed and there will be comprehensive notes on how to complete.

The main topic in all Effie's workshops will be looking for shape and form, deciding about colours and using those to make light and dark contrasts.

Effie usually works in a template making process. However other methods are welcomed into the class.

LET THERE BE LIGHT

Colour workshop

This is a day workshop based on a study of colours to understand better how they work together, and particularly how they work together to produce light. Students decide their own pace. Class participants should bring inspiration with them of what they would like to work on, so the inspiration needs to be focused on images that have light that needs catching! If there is any difficulty with finding inspiration, there will be books available for aid and reference and of course help will be available with those. Any landscape image can be used in this workshop. This workshop is challenging and good for those who really like to think hard. There is a lot to be gained from doing it.

GETTING SOME PERSPECTIVE

Landscape workshop

This is a day workshop that will deal with a basic understanding of perspective in the landscape, and an appreciation of how to simplify and break down the shapes to make a truly original, convincing design.

Some serious thought and time makes this a very satisfying day's work. A small piece of work (approx 60cm x 45cm) could be designed and drawn up, and templates cut during the day. Some may be able to finish the piecing. Whatever stage is arrived at by the end of the day, there will be a clear idea of how to complete.

NB
Anyone wishing to do workshops focused on landscape should spend some time looking at the landscape they wish to interpret, taking photographs, painting, drawing, or preparing in any way that comes naturally – generally getting to know it. The closer the source of inspiration is to your own hand and eye, the more the final piece is yours. (Everyone has the drawing skills required for this level of class.)

The two classes - Let There Be Light and Getting Some Perspective - give a sound basis on which to build work in landscape designs.

Getting Some Perspective aims to build a small piece of work so that there is a reference for further larger work. However as we all know, the smallest piece of work can be just as worthy as the largest. You may make a gem in a day.

On the Let There Be Light workshop one student said ' I will never look at colour the same way again.' Another said, 'When the class started I could feel myself groan inside. But I feel at the end of the day that I have achieved so much. It was hard work and I thoroughly enjoyed it.'
